About Us People Contact CaveCalendar
CCV develops and manages high-performance computing, data storage, and visualization resources, provides physical and virtual server hosting, and offers high-performance backup and archival services for the Brown research community. CCV's technical staff offer research system management services for departmental research computing systems on a quarterly service fee basis. CCV also maintains a one-petabyte Tivoli TSM backup/archive server for campus research data.
About Us
The Technology Center for Advanced Scientific Computing and Visualization (TCASCV) was established in 1999 with an award from the 1997 NSF MRI program, additional support from Brown University and equipment donations from IBM. The MRI award provided funding for an IBM RS/6000 SP parallel computer and Brown's first Immersive Virtual Reality Cave display.
In 2006, a more formal academic Center for Computation and Visualization (CCV) was formed to replace TCASCV, and Prof. Jan Hesthaven was named as its founding Director.
In August of 2009 Brown, in partnership with IBM, installed a new high-performance computing and data storage platform (link to be added) with a peak performance of 14 teraflops and disk capacity of 400 terabytes.
In August of 2009, under PI Prof. David Laidlaw, Brown was awarded a $2M NSF Major Research Instrumentation award to design and build a next-generation Cave display.
With the new IBM HPC platform and Cave Brown will be ideally equipped to pursue cutting-edge computational science, visualization and virtual reality research.
CCV:
- Develops and maintains parallel computing and Virtual Reality display resources for general use by the University research community.
- Provides consulting services for the configuration and management of research computing facilities dedicated to groups or Departments.
- Provides resource access for applications for our technologies in Brown's curricula.
- CCV staff participate directly in graphics, visualization and computational science research
Computational science and engineering are integral to Brown's evolving research programs and its curricula. CCV is committed to providing a resource environment and nexus of intellectual interaction that will facilitate the development of innovative multidiscipline collaboration in the spirit of Brown's open academic identity.
