Linux@Brown Inaugural Announcement

Linux@BROWN is a new effort by CCV to establish a repository and informal support for a select set of Linux distributions, third party applications and their configuration for use at Brown.

tuxThe ideas for what to provide and how to do it are lifted liberally from the Linux@DUKE project. Like Duke, we are focusing on the CentOS build of RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) for servers and production desktops, and Fedora for the more adventurous.

At the time of this announcement we have established mirrors of both the Centos and Fedora distributions. These are synchronized nightly with the mirrors kept at mirror.mcs.anl.gov, and are available to the Brown campus (i.e., only from Brown network addresses or through Brown VPN connections) at http://www.ccv.brown.edu/linux/centos/ and http://www.ccv.brown.edu/linux/fedora/ .

During the remainder of the fall semester we will be developing installation tools that streamline the basic OS installation, create a local package repository for site-licensed or redistributable software (e.g., Matlab, Acrobat Reader, Java, etc.), and set up a project bug-tracking database, mailing list and IRC (chat) server.
