The Cave

The "Cave" is our 8' cube custom-built by TAN. The floor and three walls are projected upon to provide a virtual environment.

CrystalEyes LCD-shutter glasses provide stereo depth-perception, and a variety of Intersense and Polhemus tracking devices allow software to track the position of a user's hand, head, wand, etc. The Cave also has a multi-speaker sound system that provides positional audio.

(CAVE is an acronym for "CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment" which is now trademarked by FakeSpace Systems, Inc.)

  • Some external links about "Caves": Ours is a 'VR-Cube' built by TAN

We use three systems to drive the Cave displays:

  1. A 4-pipe 8-processor SGI Onyx-2 system.
  2. A four node nVIDIA linux cluster.
  3. A 48-node linux cluster. The parallel rendering project is in collaboration with IBM and we are using SGE-3s to composit the pixels.
