The CAVE
The "Cave" is our 8' cube custom-built by TAN. The floor and three walls are projected upon to provide a virtual environment. CrystalEyes LCD-shutter glasses provide stereo depth-perception, and a variety of Intersense and Polhemus tracking devices allow software to track the position of a user's hand, head, wand, etc. The Cave also has a multi-speaker sound system that provides positional audio.
(CAVE is an acronym for "CAVE Automatic Virtual Environment" which is now trademarked by FakeSpace Systems, Inc.)

We use three systems to drive the Cave displays:
- A 4-pipe 8-processor SGI Onyx-2 system.
- A four node nVIDIA linux cluster.
- A 48-node linux cluster. The parallel rendering project is in collaboration with IBM and we are using SGE-3s to composit the pixels.
